Details of Jesus' Death:
Jesus was beaten and nailed to a cross nearly 2,000
years ago, so that our sins could be forgiven...
Prior to Jesus' death:
-
The Old Testament foretold of Jesus' death in many
places, including:
Isaiah 53:5-9 -- "But He was
pierced through for our transgressions, He was
crushed for our iniquities; the chastening for our
well-being fell upon Him, and by His scourging we
are healed. All of us like sheep have gone astray,
each of us has turned to his own way; but the LORD
has caused the iniquity of us all to fall on Him. He
was oppressed and He was afflicted, yet He did not
open His mouth; like a lamb that is led to
slaughter, and like a sheep that is silent before
its shearers, so He did not open His mouth. By
oppression and judgment He was taken away; and as
for His generation, who considered that He was cut
off out of the land of the living, for the
transgression of my people to whom the stroke was
due? His grave was assigned with wicked men, yet He
was with a rich man in His death, because He had
done no violence, nor was there any deceit in His
mouth." (NAS)
-
Jesus foretold His own death in
many places, including:
Matthew 12:39-40 -- "But He
answered and said to them, "An evil and adulterous
generation craves for a sign; and yet no sign
shall be given to it but the sign of Jonah the
prophet; for just as Jonah was three days and three
nights in the belly of the sea monster, so shall the
Son of Man be three days and three nights in the
heart of the earth." (NAS)
Matthew 17:12 -- "but I
say to you, that Elijah already came, and they did
not recognize him, but did to him whatever they
wished. So also the Son of Man is going to suffer at
their hands." (NAS)
Matthew 17:22-23 -- "And while
they were gathering together in Galilee, Jesus said
to them, "The Son of Man is going to be delivered
into the hands of men; and they will kill Him, and
He will be raised on the third day. "And they were
deeply grieved." (NAS)
-
Although His disciples did
not fully understand, preparations were made for His
death:
Matthew 26:6-13 -- "Now when Jesus was in
Bethany, at the home of Simon the leper, a woman
came to Him with an alabaster vial of very costly
perfume, and she poured it upon His head as He
reclined at the table. But the disciples were
indignant when they saw this, and said, "Why this
waste? For this perfume might have been sold for a
high price and the money given to the poor. But
Jesus, aware of this, said to them, "Why do you
bother the woman? For she has done a good deed to
Me. For the poor you have with you always; but you
do not always have Me. For when she poured this
perfume upon My body, she did it to prepare Me for
burial. Truly I say to you, wherever this gospel is
preached in the whole world, what this woman has
done shall also be spoken of in memory of her."
(NAS)
Luke 22:17-21 -- "And when He had taken a cup
and given thanks, He said, "Take this and share it
among yourselves; for I say to you, I will not drink
of the fruit of the vine from now on until the
kingdom of God comes." And when He had taken some
bread and given thanks, He broke it, and gave
it to them, saying, "This is My body which is
given for you; do this in remembrance of Me." And in
the same way He took the cup after they had eaten,
saying, "This cup which is poured out for you is the
new covenant in My blood. "But behold, the hand of
the one betraying Me is with Me on the table." (NAS)
Jesus was arrested, severely beaten, humiliated and
then, after taking our sins with Him to the cross,
died on the cross:
-
The Old Testament prophets
foretold what was to come:
Isaiah 52:14 -- "Just as
many were astonished at you, My people, so His
appearance was marred more than any man, and His
form more than the sons of men." (NAS)
Isaiah 52:14 --"Just as
there were many who were appalled at him-- his
appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any man
and his form marred beyond human likeness--" (NIV)
Isaiah 50:6 -- "I gave My back to those who strike
me, and My cheeks to those who pluck out the
beard; I did not cover My face from humiliation and
spitting." (NAS)
Isaiah 53:5 -- "But He was pierced
through for our transgressions, He was crushed for
our iniquities; the chastening for our well-being
fell upon Him, and by His scourging we are
healed." (NAS)

Excerpts of what happened --
Matthew's account:
Matthew 27:2 -- "and they bound
Him, and led Him away, and delivered Him up to
Pilate the governor...
27:23 -- "And he said, "Why,
what evil has He done?" But they kept shouting all
the more, saying, "Let Him be crucified!"
27:26 --
"Then he released Barabbas for them; but after
having Jesus scourged, he delivered Him to be
crucified."
27:27-31 -- "Then the soldiers of the
governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered
the whole Roman cohort around Him. And they
stripped Him, and put a scarlet robe on Him. And
after weaving a crown of thorns, they put it on His
head, and a reed in His right hand; and they kneeled
down before Him and mocked Him, saying, "Hail, King
of the Jews!" And they spat on Him, and took the
reed and began to beat Him on the head. And after
they had mocked Him, they took His robe off and put
His garments on Him, and led Him away to crucify
Him.
27:35-37 -- "And when they had crucified Him,
they divided up His garments among themselves,
casting lots; and sitting down, they began to keep
watch over Him there. And they put up above His head
the charge against Him which read, "THIS IS JESUS
THE KING OF THE JEWS."
27:39-44 -- "And those
passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their
heads, and saying, "You who are going to destroy
the temple and rebuild it in three days, save
Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from
the cross." In the same way the chief priests also,
along with the scribes and elders, were mocking
Him, and saying, "He saved others; He cannot save
Himself. He is the King of Israel; let Him now come
down from the cross, and we shall believe in Him.
"He trusts in God; let Him deliver Him now, if He
takes pleasure in Him; for He said, 'I am the Son of
God.'" And the robbers also who had been crucified
with Him were casting the same insult at Him."
27:45-46 -- "Now from the sixth hour darkness fell
upon all the land until the ninth hour. And about
the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice,
saying," Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? "that is," My
God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?" 27:50 --
"And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and
yielded up His spirit." (all the above verses are
NAS version)

Excerpts of what happened -- Mark's
account:
Mark 14:46 -- "And they laid hands on Him,
and seized Him."
14:55-56 -- "Now the chief priests
and the whole Council kept trying to obtain
testimony against Jesus to put Him to death; and
they were not finding any. For many were giving
false testimony against Him, and yet their
testimony was not consistent."
14:65 -- "And some
began to spit at Him, and to blindfold Him, and to
beat Him with their fists, and to say to Him,
"Prophesy!" And the officers received Him with slaps
in the face."
15:3 -- "And the chief priests began to accuse Him harshly."
15:14 -- "But Pilate
was saying to them, "Why, what evil has He done?"
But they shouted all the more, "Crucify Him!"
15:16-20 -- "And the soldiers took Him away into the
palace (that is, the Praetorium), and they called
together the whole Roman cohort. And they dressed
Him up in purple, and after weaving a crown of
thorns, they put it on Him; and they began to
acclaim Him, "Hail, King of the Jews!" And they kept
beating His head with a reed, and spitting at Him,
and kneeling and bowing before Him. And after they
had mocked Him, they took the purple off Him, and
put His garments on Him. And they led Him out to
crucify Him."
15:24-25 -- "And they crucified Him,
and divided up His garments among themselves,
casting lots for them, to decide what each should
take. And it was the third hour when they crucified
Him."
15:29-34 -- "And those passing by were hurling
abuse at Him, wagging their heads, and saying, "Ha!
You who are going to destroy the temple and
rebuild it in three days, save Yourself, and come
down from the cross!" In the same way the chief
priests also, along with the scribes, were mocking
Him among themselves and saying, "He saved others;
He cannot save Himself. "Let this Christ, the King
of Israel, now come down from the cross, so that we
may see and believe!" And those who were crucified
with Him were casting the same insult at Him. And
when the sixth hour had come, darkness fell over the
whole land until the ninth hour. And at the ninth
hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, "Eloi, Eloi,
lama sabachthani?" which is translated, "My God, My
God, why hast Thou forsaken Me?"
15:37 -- "And Jesus
uttered a loud cry, and breathed His last." (all the
above verses are NAS version)

Excerpts of what
happened -- Luke's account:
Luke 22:54 -- "And
having arrested Him, they led Him away, and
brought Him to the house of the high priest; but
Peter was following at a distance."
22:61 -- "And
the Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter
remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told
him, "Before a cock crows today, you will deny Me
three times."
22:63-65 -- "And the men who were
holding Jesus in custody were mocking Him, and
beating Him, and they blindfolded Him and were
asking Him, saying, "Prophesy, who is the one who
hit You?" And they were saying many other things
against Him, blaspheming."
23:10-11 -- "And the
chief priests and the scribes were standing there,
accusing Him vehemently. And Herod with his
soldiers, after treating Him with contempt and
mocking Him, dressed Him in a gorgeous robe and sent
Him back to Pilate."
23:21 -- "but they kept on
calling out, saying, "Crucify, crucify Him!"
23:34-41 -- "But Jesus was saying, "Father, forgive
them; for they do not know what they are doing." And
they cast lots, dividing up His garments among
themselves. And the people stood by, looking on. And
even the rulers were sneering at Him, saying, "He
saved others; let Him save Himself if this is the
Christ of God, His Chosen One." And the soldiers
also mocked Him, coming up to Him, offering Him sour
wine, and saying, "If You are the King of the Jews,
save Yourself!"Now there was also an inscription
above Him, "THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS." And one
of the criminals who were hanged there was hurling
abuse at Him, saying, "Are You not the Christ? Save
Yourself and us!" But the other answered, and
rebuking him said, "Do you not even fear God, since
you are under the same sentence of condemnation?
"And we indeed justly, for we are receiving what we
deserve for our deeds; but this man has done nothing
wrong."
23:44-46 -- "And it was now about the sixth
hour, and darkness fell over the whole land until
the ninth hour, the sun being obscured; and the veil
of the temple was torn in two. And Jesus, crying out
with a loud voice, said, "Father, into Thy hands I
commit My spirit." And having said this, He breathed
His last. (all the above verses are NAS version)

Excerpts of what happened -- John's account:
John
18:12-13 - "So the Roman cohort and the commander,
and the officers of the Jews, arrested Jesus and
bound Him, and led Him to Annas first; for he was
father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was high priest that
year."
18:22-23 - "And when He had said this, one of
the officers standing by gave Jesus a blow, saying,
"Is that the way You answer the high priest?" Jesus
answered him, "If I have spoken wrongly, bear
witness of the wrong; but if rightly, why do you
strike Me?"
19:1-6 -- "Then Pilate therefore took
Jesus, and scourged Him. And the soldiers wove a
crown of thorns and put it on His head, and arrayed
Him in a purple robe; and they began to come up to
Him, and say, "Hail, King of the Jews!" and to give
Him blows in the face. And Pilate came out again,
and said to them, "Behold, I am bringing Him out to
you, that you may know that I find no guilt in Him."
Jesus therefore came out, wearing the crown of
thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to
them, "Behold, the Man!" When therefore the chief
priests and the officers saw Him, they cried out,
saying, "Crucify, crucify!" Pilate said to them,
"Take Him yourselves, and crucify Him, for I find no
guilt in Him."
19:17-18 -- "They took Jesus
therefore, and He went out, bearing His own cross,
to the place called the Place of a Skull, which is
called in Hebrew, Golgotha. There they crucified
Him, and with Him two other men, one on either side,
and Jesus in between."
19:30 -- "When Jesus
therefore had received the sour wine, He said, "It
is finished!"And He bowed His head, and gave up His
spirit." (all verses above are from the NAS version)
