Correct! Keep up the good work.
"And I
also say to you that you are Peter, and upon this
rock I will build My church; and
the gates of Hades
shall not overpower it." Matthew 16:18 (NAS)
In
the earliest New Testament manuscripts for Matthew
16:18, the Greek word "haides" is translated
into the English word "Hades." This
Greek word "haides" is defined as "unseen,
i.e., "Hades" or the place (state) of departed
souls." In other word, Hades is the unseen place of
the dead.
The gates of death will not overpower or prevail
against the church. People who are not yet
Christians are held by the gates of Hades...the
gates of death. As we saw in Lesson 1, a
person who sins is separated from God (Isaiah
59:1-2) and deserves the penalty that sin pays...the
penalty of death (Romans 6:23).
However, through belief in Jesus and obedience to
His gospel (see Lesson1), we are released from the
power of death...released from the gates of Hades.
