Romans
15:12 says: And again Isaiah says, "There shall come
the root of Jesse, and He who arises to rule over
the Gentiles, in Him (Jesus) shall the Gentiles
hope." (NAS)
This is a prophecy of the coming of Christ (a
descendant of Jesse--Jesse was the father of
David--and Jesus descended from David -- see the
genealogy of Christ at Luke 3:31), not a prophecy of
the coming of Peter. Only Christ had the authority
to rule over the church. Peter was one of many
elders in the church. Yet he did not have the
authority to lord over the church.
Consider the words of Peter himself:
1
Peter 5:1-4 "Therefore, I exhort the elders among
you, as your fellow elder and witness of the
sufferings of Christ, and a partaker also of the
glory that is to be revealed, shepherd the flock of
God among you, exercising oversight not under
compulsion, but voluntarily, according to the will
of God; and not for sordid gain, but with eagerness;
nor yet as lording it over those allotted to your
charge, but proving to be examples to the flock. And
when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive
the unfading crown of glory. (NAS)
Jesus is the Chief Shepherd. |
