Correct.
Now
He (Jesus) was telling them a parable to show that
at all times they ought to pray and not to lose
heart, 2 saying, "There was in a certain
city a judge who did not fear God, and did not
respect man. 3 "And there was a widow in
that city, and she kept coming to him, saying, 'Give
me legal protection from my opponent.' 4
"And for a while he was unwilling; but afterward he
said to himself, 'Even though I do not fear God nor
respect man, 5 yet because this widow
bothers me, I will give her legal protection, lest
by continually coming she wear me out.'" 6
And the Lord said, "Hear what the unrighteous judge
said; 7 now shall not God bring about
justice for His elect, who cry to Him day and night,
and will He delay long over them? 8 "I
tell you that He will bring about justice for them
speedily. However, when the Son of Man comes, will
He find faith on the earth?" Luke 18:1-8 (NAS)
Waiting For God?
There are some who conclude from this parable
that God will be slow about bringing about
justice...just as the unrighteous judge in this
parable. But this conclusion in directly
opposite from what the text says. Note the
last two verses:
...now
shall not God bring about justice for His elect, who
cry to Him day and night, and will He delay long
over them? "I tell you that
He will
bring about justice for them speedily.
However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find
faith on the earth?" Luke 18:1-8 (NAS)
Do you believe that
God will bring about justice speedily for those that
belong to Him?
Praying For
Your Enemies
As we have seen in
the first part of this lesson, Jesus wants His
disciples to pray for their enemies and do good to
them. As the widow in the parable, we ask God
to protect us from our enemies. However, God
does not want us as individual Christians to
take out vengeance on our enemies:
Never
take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for
the wrath of God, for it is written, "Vengeance is
Mine, I will repay," says the Lord. 20
"But if your enemy is hungry, feed him, and if he is
thirsty, give him a drink; for in so doing you will
heap burning coals upon his head." 21 Do
not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with
good. Romans 12:19-21 (NAS)
Sometimes the punishment of
our enemies is carried out by God through the
governments, courts or authorities of this world
(see Romans 13:1). However, each Christian
should pray that his or her enemy repents and turns
back to God. It is up to God's timing to
determine when the punishment will come if that
enemy does not repent:
For
we know Him who said, "Vengeance is Mine, I will
repay." And again, "The Lord will judge His people."
It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of
the living God. Hebrews 10:30-31 (NAS)
Because it is up to God's
timing, this is the reason that no one knows when
the Lord will come again. According to Matthew
24:36, only God knows the date... and He is
patiently waiting for all to come to repentance:
But
the present heavens and earth by His word are being
reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and
destruction of ungodly men. 8 But do not
let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that
with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a
thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is
not slow about His promise, as some count slowness,
but is patient toward you, not wishing for any to
perish but for all to come to repentance. 10
But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in
which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the
elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and
the earth and its works will be burned up. 2 Peter
3:7-10 (NAS)
