Before Acts 2:  To Whom Was the Holy Spirit Given and Why?

Genesis chapter 1 to Acts 1 - The Spirit's Influence On Them - Part 1:

Following are scriptures from Genesis 1 to Acts 1 that give specific reference to a particular influence the Holy Spirit had on the few people that God had given His Spirit to:

Balaam, a prophet of God:

Numbers 24:2-4 -- "And Balaam lifted up his eyes and saw Israel camping tribe by tribe; and the Spirit of God came upon him. And he took up his discourse and said, "The oracle of Balaam the son of Beor, and the oracle of the man whose eye is opened; The oracle of him who hears the words of God, who sees the vision of the Almighty, falling down, yet having his eyes uncovered..."  (NAS)

Saul's messengers and prophets:

1 Samuel 19:20, 23 -- "Then Saul sent messengers to take David, but when they saw the company of the prophets prophesying, with Samuel standing and presiding over them, the Spirit of God came upon the messengers of Saul; and they also prophesied...And he proceeded there to Naioth in Ramah; and the Spirit of God came upon him also, so that he went along prophesying continually until he came to Naioth in Ramah." (NAS)

Azariah, a prophet of God:

2 Chronicles 15:1-2 -- "Now the Spirit of God came on Azariah the son of Oded, and he went out to meet Asa and said to him, "Listen to me, Asa, and all Judah and Benjamin: the LORD is with you when you are with Him. And if you seek Him, He will let you find Him; but if you forsake Him, He will forsake you..."  (NAS)

Jahaziel, a prophet of God:

2 Chronicles 20:14-15 -- "Then in the midst of the assembly the Spirit of the LORD came upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, the Levite of the sons of Asaph; and he said, "Listen, all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and King Jehoshaphat: thus says the LORD to you, 'Do not fear or be dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours but God's..."  (NAS)

Zechariah, a prophet of God:

2 Chronicles 24:20 -- "Then the Spirit of God came on Zechariah the son of Jehoiada the priest; and he stood above the people and said to them, "Thus God has said, `Why do you transgress the commandments of the LORD and do not prosper? Because you have forsaken the LORD, He has also forsaken you.'" (NAS)

Isaiah, a prophet of God:

Isaiah 48:16 -- "Come near to me, listen to this: from the first I have not spoken in secret, from the time it took place, I was there. And now the Lord GOD has sent me, and His Spirit." (NAS)

Isaiah 61:1 -- "The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to captives, and freedom to prisoners;" (NAS)

Ezekiel, a prophet of God - many referring to Ezekiel's visions:

Ezekiel 2:2 -- "And as He spoke to me the Spirit entered me and set me on my feet; and I heard Him speaking to me. (NAS)

Ezekiel 3:12 -- "Then the Spirit lifted me up, and I heard a great rumbling sound behind me, "Blessed be the glory of the LORD in His place." (NAS)

Ezekiel 3:14 -- "So the Spirit lifted me up and took me away; and I went embittered in the rage of my spirit, and the hand of the LORD was strong on me." (NAS)

Ezekiel 3:24 -- "The Spirit then entered me and made me stand on my feet, and He spoke with me and said to me, "Go, shut yourself up in your house." (NAS)

Ezekiel 8:3 -- "And He stretched out the form of a hand and caught me by a lock of my head; and the Spirit lifted me up between earth and heaven and brought me in the visions of God to Jerusalem, to the entrance of the north gate of the inner court, where the seat of the idol of jealousy, which provokes to jealousy, was located. (NAS)

Ezekiel 11:1 -- "Moreover, the Spirit lifted me up and brought me to the east gate of the LORD'S house which faced eastward. And behold, there were twenty-five men at the entrance of the gate, and among them I saw Jaazaniah son of Azzur and Pelatiah son of Benaiah, leaders of the people." (NAS)

Ezekiel 11:5 -- "Then the Spirit of the LORD fell upon me, and He said to me, "Say, Thus says the LORD, "So you think, house of Israel, for I know your thoughts." (NAS)

Ezekiel 11:24 -- "And the Spirit lifted me up and brought me in a vision by the Spirit of God to the exiles in Chaldea. So the vision that I had seen left me." (NAS)

Ezekiel 43:5 -- "And the Spirit lifted me up and brought me into the inner court; and behold, the glory of the LORD filled the house." (NAS)

Micah, a prophet of God:  

Micah 3:8 -- "On the other hand I am filled with power-- With the Spirit of the LORD-- And with justice and courage To make known to Jacob his rebellious act, even to Israel his sin." (NAS)

Zechariah, a prophet of God:

Zechariah 4:6 -- "Then he answered and said to me, "This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel saying, `Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,' says the LORD of hosts." (NAS)

The former prophets:

Zechariah 7:12 -- "And they made their hearts like flint so that they could not hear the law and the words which the LORD of hosts had sent by His Spirit through the former prophets; therefore great wrath came from the LORD of hosts." (NAS)

Zacharias, a prophet of God:

Luke 1:67 -- "And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying..."(NAS)

Simeon, a prophet of God:

Luke 2:25-27 -- "And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout, looking for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. And he came in the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to carry out for Him the custom of the Law.."

Question:

According to the scriptures above, when the Holy Spirit was given or the Holy Spirit came on the prophets, what did it cause them to speak?

  1. Speak their own opinions.
  2. Speak words that no one could understand.
  3. To speak the words that God had given to them.
