In the New Testament, there are some warnings given
about a particular sin against the Holy Spirit:
the sin of blasphemy. The English word
"blasphemy" comes from the Greek word #988 "blasphemia."
Strong's Concordance defines "blasphemia" as
vilification, evil speaking or railing. Vine's
Expository Dictionary of New Testament Words defines
it as "to injure by speech, defamatory speech."
Examples of Blasphemy Against the Holy Spirit, and
the Consequences
1. Matthew 12:22-41:
A demon-possessed man is
brought to Jesus for healing:
22
Then there was brought to Him a demon-possessed man
who was blind and dumb, and He healed him, so that
the dumb man spoke and saw. 23 And all
the multitudes were amazed, and began to say, "This
man cannot be the Son of David, can he?"
Matthew 12:22-23 (NAS)
The Pharisees see the
miracle and claim that Jesus was doing this by the
power of the ruler of the demons:
24
But when the Pharisees heard it, they said, "This
man casts out demons only by Beelzebul the ruler of
the demons." Matthew 12:24 (NAS)
Jesus tells the
Pharisees the consequences of their statements and
thoughts:
25
And knowing their thoughts He said to them, "Any
kingdom divided against itself is laid waste; and
any city or house divided against itself shall not
stand. 26 "And if Satan casts out Satan, he is
divided against himself; how then shall his kingdom
stand? 27 "And if I by Beelzebul cast out demons, by
whom do your sons cast them out? Consequently they
shall be your judges. 28 "But if I cast out demons
by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has
come upon you. 29 "Or how can anyone enter the
strong man's house and carry off his property,
unless he first binds the strong man And then he
will plunder his house. 30 "He who is not with Me is
against Me; and he who does not gather with Me
scatters. 31 "Therefore I say to you, any sin and
blasphemy shall be forgiven men, but blasphemy
against the Spirit shall not be forgiven. 32 "And
whoever shall speak a word against the Son of Man,
it shall be forgiven him; but whoever shall speak
against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven
him, either in this age, or in the age to come. 33
"Either make the tree good, and its fruit good; or
make the tree bad, and its fruit bad; for the tree
is known by its fruit. 34 "You brood of vipers, how
can you, being evil, speak what is good? For the
mouth speaks out of that which fills the heart. 35
"The good man out of his good treasure brings forth
what is good; and the evil man out of his evil
treasure brings forth what is evil. 36 "And I say to
you, that every careless word that men shall speak,
they shall render account for it in the day of
judgment. 37 "For by your words you shall be
justified, and by your words you shall be
condemned." Matthew 12:25-37 (NAS)
2. Mark 3:22-30:
The scribes accuse Jesus
of being possessed by the ruler of demons:
22
And the scribes who came down from Jerusalem were
saying, "He is possessed by Beelzebul," and "He
casts out the demons by the ruler of the demons."
Mark 3:22 (NAS)
Jesus' response to their
accusation:
23
And He called them to Himself and began speaking to
them in parables, "How can Satan cast out Satan?
24
"And if a kingdom is divided against itself, that
kingdom cannot stand. 25 "And if a house is divided
against itself, that house will not be able to
stand. 26 "And if Satan has risen up against himself
and is divided, he cannot stand, but he is finished!
27 "But no one can enter the strong man's house and
plunder his property unless he first binds the
strong man, and then he will plunder his house. 28
"Truly I say to you, all sins shall be forgiven the
sons of men, and whatever blasphemies they utter;
29
but whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never
has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin"--
30 because they were saying, "He has an unclean
spirit." Mark 3:23-30 (NAS)
3. Luke 12:10:
"And
everyone who will speak a word against the Son of
Man, it shall be forgiven him; but he who blasphemes
against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven
him." Luke 12:10 (NAS)
