Examples of Faith - The Faith of Abraham Is Tested - Hebrews 11:17-19

By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac; and he who had received the promises was offering up his only begotten son; 18 it was he to whom it was said, "In Isaac your descendants shall be called." 19 He considered that God is able to raise men even from the dead; from which he also received him back as a type."  Hebrews 11:17-19

God had made a promise to Abraham that his son Isaac would be the father of a great nation.

But now God tests Abraham's faith by asking Abraham to sacrifice his son.

This is recorded in Genesis chapter 22.  The story is summarized as follows:

  • God tells Abraham to go to the land of Moriah to offer Isaac as a sacrifice (Genesis 22:1-2)
  • Abraham obeys, taking Isaac to the land and prepares him to be offered (Genesis 22:3-10)
  • Just before Abraham kills Isaac, the Lord stops him...and gives him a ram to offer in Isaac's place (Genesis 22:11-14)
  • Because of Abraham's faith and obedience, God again blessed Abraham and tells him that "in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed" (Genesis 22:18)-- a prophecy of Jesus, who descended from Isaac through His mother Mary.

Question 16a:

According to Hebrews 11:19, what was it that Abraham had hoped for?

  1. That after obeying God, God would be able to raise Isaac from the dead.
  2. That after obeying God, God would give him another child.
  3. That he didn't have to obey God.

Raise From Death Another Child Didn't Have to Obey

Other Translations - Hebrews 11:17-19:

By faith Abraham, when God tested him, offered Isaac as a sacrifice. He who had received the promises was about to sacrifice his one and only son, 18 even though God had said to him, "It is through Isaac that your offspring will be reckoned." 19 Abraham reasoned that God could raise the dead, and figuratively speaking, he did receive Isaac back from death. (NIV)

By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, 18 of whom it was said, "In Isaac your seed shall be called," 19 concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense. (NKJ)

By faith Abraham, being tried, offered up Isaac: yea, he that had gladly received the promises was offering up his only begotten (son); 18 even he to whom it was said, In Isaac shall thy seed be called: 19 accounting that God (is) able to raise up, even from the dead; from whence he did also in a figure receive him back. (ASV)

By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son, 18 Of whom it was said, That in Isaac shall thy seed be called: 19 Accounting that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead; from whence also he received him in a figure.
