Examples of Faith - The 3,000 Who Obeyed the Gospel:
As we have seen...3,000 people in Acts 2 who believed in the gospel message
were told to repent and be baptized
for the forgiveness of sins...and to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
They had heard Peter's gospel message and believed. They were pierced
to the heart by this gospel message. They responded in obedience to the
gospel.
How does repentance, confession and baptism relate to faith?
Someone might ask, how does Jesus' commands for people
to believe, repent, confess, be baptized, etc. relate to faith?
Let's see what the scriptures say about this:
Paul, writing to the church in Rome opens his letter by
saying:
"Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the
gospel of God,
2
which He promised beforehand through His
prophets in the holy Scriptures,
3
concerning His Son, who
was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh,
4
who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead,
according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord,
5
through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience
of faith among all the Gentiles, for His name's sake..." Romans 1:1-5
(NAS)
In Paul's conclusion to his letter to the Romans, he says:
"Now to Him who is able to establish you
according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the
revelation of the mystery which has been kept secret for long ages past,
26
but now is manifested, and by the Scriptures of the
prophets, according to the commandment of the eternal God, has been made known
to all the nations, leading to obedience of faith;
27
to
the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, be the glory forever. Amen."
Romans 16:25-27 (NAS)
Question:
According to Romans 1:1, Paul was called to be an apostle, set apart for the
gospel of God. In Romans 1:5, he goes on to say that, through Jesus
Christ, he had received grace and apostleship to bring about what
among the Gentiles?
- The obedience of faith.
- Faith without obedience.
- Belief only.
