Instructions with Regard to
the Resurrection of the Dead
Matthew 22:23-33 (see also Mark 12:18-27, Luke 20:27-38)
On that day some Sadducees (who say
there is no resurrection) came to Him and questioned Him, 24
saying, "Teacher, Moses said, 'If a man dies, having no children, his brother as
next of kin shall marry his wife, and raise up an offspring to his brother.'
25 "Now there were seven brothers with us; and the first
married and died, and having no offspring left his wife to his brother;
26 so also the second, and the third, down to the seventh.
27 "And last of all, the woman died. 28
"In the resurrection therefore whose wife of the seven shall she be? For they
all had her." 29 But Jesus answered and said to them, "You
are mistaken, not understanding the Scriptures, or the power of God.
30 "For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are
given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. 31 "But
regarding the resurrection of the dead, have you not read that which was spoken
to you by God, saying, 32 'I am the God of Abraham, and
the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob'? He is not the God of the dead but of
the living." 33 And when the multitudes heard this, they
were astonished at His teaching. (NAS)
John 5:28-29
"Do not marvel at this; for an hour is
coming, in which all who are in the tombs shall hear His voice, 29 and shall come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection
of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment. (NAS)
John 11:21-27
Martha therefore said to Jesus, "Lord,
if You had been here, my brother would not have died. 22
"Even now I know that whatever You ask of God, God will give You."
23 Jesus said to her, "Your brother shall rise again."
24 Martha said to Him, "I know that he will rise again in
the resurrection on the last day." 25 Jesus said to her,
"I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me shall live even if he
dies, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in Me shall
never die. Do you believe this?" 27 She said to Him, "Yes,
Lord; I have believed that You are the Christ, the Son of God, even He who comes
into the world." (NAS)
Acts 2:29-32
"Brethren, I may confidently say to you
regarding the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is
with us to this day. 30 "And so, because he was a prophet,
and knew that God had sworn to him with an oath to seat one of his descendants
upon his throne, 31 he looked ahead and spoke of the
resurrection of the Christ, that He was neither abandoned to Hades, nor did His
flesh suffer decay. 32 "This Jesus God raised up again, to
which we are all witnesses. (NAS)
Acts 4:33
And with great power the apostles were
giving witness to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and abundant grace was
upon them all. (NAS)
Acts 24:14-15
"But this I admit to you, that
according to the Way which they call a sect I do serve the God of our fathers,
believing everything that is in accordance with the Law, and that is written in
the Prophets; 15 having a hope in God, which these men
cherish themselves, that there shall certainly be a resurrection of both the
righteous and the wicked. (NAS)
Romans 1:4-5
"...who was declared the Son of God with
power by the resurrection from the dead, according to the Spirit of holiness,
Jesus Christ our Lord, 5 through whom we have received
grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the
Gentiles, for His name's sake..." (NAS)
Romans 6:4-5
"Therefore we have been buried with Him
through baptism into death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead
through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
5 For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of
His death, certainly we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection..."
(NAS)
1 Corinthians 15:12-24
"Now if Christ is preached, that He has
been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no
resurrection of the dead? 13 But if there is no
resurrection of the dead, not even Christ has been raised; 14
and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also
is vain. 15 Moreover we are even found to be false
witnesses of God, because we witnessed against God that He raised Christ, whom
He did not raise, if in fact the dead are not raised. 16
For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised; 17 and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are
still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen
asleep in Christ have perished. 19 If we have hoped in
Christ in this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied. 20
But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are
asleep. 21 For since by a man came death, by a man also
came the resurrection of the dead. 22 For as in Adam all
die, so also in Christ all shall be made alive. 23 But
each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, after that those who are
Christ's at His coming, 24 then comes the end, when He
delivers up the kingdom to the God and Father, when He has abolished all rule
and all authority and power." (NAS)
1 Corinthians 15:35-58
But someone will say, "How are the dead
raised? And with what kind of body do they come?" 36 You
fool! That which you sow does not come to life unless it dies; 37
and that which you sow, you do not sow the body which is to be, but a bare
grain, perhaps of wheat or of something else. 38 But God
gives it a body just as He wished, and to each of the seeds a body of its own.
39 All flesh is not the same flesh, but there is one
flesh of men, and another flesh of beasts, and another flesh of birds, and
another of fish. 40 There are also heavenly bodies and
earthly bodies, but the glory of the heavenly is one, and the glory of the
earthly is another. 41 There is one glory of the sun, and
another glory of the moon, and another glory of the stars; for star differs from
star in glory. 42 So also is the resurrection of the dead.
It is sown a perishable body it is raised an imperishable body
43 it is sown in dishonor, it is raised in glory; it is
sown in weakness, it is raised in power; 44 it is sown a
natural body, it is raised a spiritual body. If there is a natural body, there
is also a spiritual body. 45 So also it is written, "The
first man, Adam, became a living soul." The last Adam became a life-giving
spirit. 46 However, the spiritual is not first, but the
natural; then the spiritual.
47
The first man is from the
earth, earthy; the second man is from heaven.
48
As is the
earthy, so also are those who are earthy; and as is the heavenly, so also are
those who are heavenly.
49
And just as we have borne the
image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.
50
Now I say this, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot
inherit the kingdom of God; nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.
51
Behold, I tell you a mystery; we shall not all sleep,
but we shall all be changed,
52
in a moment, in the
twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the
dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.
53
For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on
immortality.
54
But when this perishable will have put on
the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come
about the saying that is written, "Death is swallowed up in victory.
55
"O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your
sting?"
56
The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin
is the law;
57
but thanks be to God, who gives us the
victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
58
Therefore, my
beloved brethren, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the
Lord, knowing that your toil is not in vain in the Lord." (NAS)
2 Corinthians 4:13-14
But having the same spirit of faith,
according to what is written, "I believed, therefore I spoke," we also believe,
therefore also we speak;
14
knowing that He who raised the
Lord Jesus will raise us also with Jesus and will present us with you. (NAS)
Philippians 3:8-11
More than that, I count all things to be
loss in view of the surpassing value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I
have suffered the loss of all things, and count them but rubbish in order that I
may gain Christ,
9
and may be found in Him, not having a
righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in
Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith,
10
that I may know Him, and the power of His resurrection
and the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death;
11
in order that I may attain to the resurrection from the
dead. (NAS)
Philippians 3:20-21
For our citizenship is in heaven, from
which also we eagerly wait for a Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ;
21
who will transform the body of our humble state into conformity with
the body of His glory, by the exertion of the power that He has even to subject
all things to Himself." (NAS)
1Thessalonians 4:13-18
But we do not want you to be
uninformed, brethren, about those who are asleep, that you may not grieve, as do
the rest who have no hope.
14
For if we believe that Jesus
died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen
asleep in Jesus.
15
For this we say to you by the word of
the Lord, that we who are alive, and remain until the coming of the Lord, shall
not precede those who have fallen asleep.
16
For the Lord
Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the
archangel, and with the trumpet of God; and the dead in Christ shall rise first.
17
Then we who are alive and remain shall be caught up
together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and thus we shall
always be with the Lord.
18
Therefore comfort one another
with these words. (NAS)
2 Timothy 2:18
"...men who have gone astray from the
truth saying that the resurrection has already taken place, and thus they upset
the faith of some." (NAS)
1 Peter 1:3-5
"Blessed be the God and Father of our
Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His great mercy has caused us to be born
again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
4
to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and
undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you,
5
who are protected by the power of God through faith for a salvation ready to be
revealed in the last time." (NAS)
1 Peter 3:18-22
For Christ also died for sins once for
all, the just for the unjust, in order that He might bring us to God, having
been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;
19
in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison,
20
who once were disobedient, when the patience of God
kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a
few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water.
21
And corresponding to that, baptism now saves you-- not
the removal of dirt from the flesh, but an appeal to God for a good conscience--
through the resurrection of Jesus Christ,
22
who is at the
right hand of God, having gone into heaven, after angels and authorities and
powers had been subjected to Him. (NAS)
Revelation 20:4-6
And I saw thrones, and they sat upon
them, and judgment was given to them. And I saw the souls of those who had been
beheaded because of the testimony of Jesus and because of the word of God, and
those who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received the
mark upon their forehead and upon their hand; and they came to life and reigned
with Christ for a thousand years.
5
The rest of the dead
did not come to life until the thousand years were completed. This is the first
resurrection.
6 Blessed and holy is the one who has a part
in the first resurrection; over these the second death has no power, but they
will be priests of God and of Christ and will reign with Him for a thousand
years." (NAS)
