What did the 24 elders say after these voices announced that He would reign forever and ever?

New American Standard Version of the BibleAnd the twenty-four elders, who sit on their thrones before God, fell on their faces and worshiped God, saying, "We give Thee thanks, O Lord God, the Almighty, who art and who wast, because Thou hast taken Thy great power and hast begun to reign.  And the nations were enraged, and Thy wrath came, and the time came for the dead to be judged, and the time to give their reward to Thy bond-servants the prophets and to the saints and to those who fear Thy name, the small and the great, and to destroy those who destroy the earth."  Revelation 11:16-18 (NAS)

Judgment day and the reward to God's bond-servants:

Verse 18 says, the time has come for the dead to be judged...and for the reward for God's bond-servants, which include:

  • The prophets, and

  • the saints,

  • those who fear Thy name, the small and the great.

The time has also come "to destroy those who destroy the earth."

Then what happened in heaven?

New American Standard Version of the BibleAnd the temple of God which is in heaven was opened; and the ark of His covenant appeared in His temple, and there were flashes of lightning and sounds and peals of thunder and an earthquake and a great hailstorm.  Revelation 11:16-19 (NAS)

As a reminder...Revelation 9:13 through 11:14 describes the second woe, after the sounding of the sixth trumpet.  The information from chapter 10 and 11 is added below:

What John Saw and Heard

1
The first Angel Sounds His Trumpet

Revelation 8:7 -  And the first sounded, and there came hail and fire, mixed with blood, and they were thrown to the earth; and a third of the earth was burned up, and a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up." (NAS)

2
The 2nd Angel Sounds His Trumpet

Revelation 8:8-9 - And the second angel sounded, and something like a great mountain burning with fire was thrown into the sea; and a third of the sea became blood; 9and a third of the creatures, which were in the sea and had life, died; and a third of the ships were destroyed. (NAS)

3
The 3rd Angel Sounds His Trumpet

Revelation 8:10-11 - And the third angel sounded, and a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of waters; 11and the name of the star is called Wormwood; and a third of the waters became wormwood; and many men died from the waters, because they were made bitter. (NAS)

4
The 4th Angel Sounds His Trumpet

Revelation 8:12 - And the fourth angel sounded, and a third of the sun and a third of the moon and a third of the stars were smitten, so that a third of them might be darkened and the day might not shine for a third of it, and the night in the same way. (NAS)

In Revelation 8:13, the angel warns of the
three woes.

The First Woe: Torment
(to those who are not the bond-servants of God)

5

The 5th Angel Sounds His Trumpet

The star and the pit (Revelation 9:1-2):

And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star from heaven which had fallen to the earth; and the key of the bottomless pit was given to him. 2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and smoke went up out of the pit, like the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by the smoke of the pit. (NAS)

The locusts (Revelation 9:3-10):

3And out of the smoke came forth locusts upon the earth; and power was given them, as the scorpions of the earth have power. 4And they were told that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, nor any green thing, nor any tree, but only the men who do not have the seal of God on their foreheads.

  • Power to torment:

6And they were not permitted to kill anyone, but to torment for five months; and their torment was like the torment of a scorpion when it stings a man. 6And in those days men will seek death and will not find it; and they will long to die and death flees from them. (NAS)

  • Physical appearance in vision:

7And the appearance of the locusts was like horses prepared for battle; and on their heads, as it were, crowns like gold, and their faces were like the faces of men. 8And they had hair like the hair of women, and their teeth were like the teeth of lions. 9And they had breastplates like breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was like the sound of chariots, of many horses rushing to battle. 10And they have tails like scorpions, and stings; and in their tails is their power to hurt men for five months. (NAS)

The king of the locusts (Revelation 9:11):

11They have as king over them, the angel of the abyss; his name in Hebrew is Abaddon*, and in the Greek he has the name Apollyon.

* Abaddon is the Hebrew word for "the place of death".  Apollyon in the Greek means "destroyer."

The First Woe is Past (Revelation 9:12):

12The first woe is past; behold, two woes are still coming after these things. (NAS)

The Second Woe: Death to 1/3, and
God's vengeance on those who kill His witnesses.
(to those who are not the bond-servants of God)

6

The 6th Angel Sounds His Trumpet.

John hears a voice (9:13-15):

13And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God, 14one saying to the sixth angel who had the trumpet, "Release the four angels who are bound at the great river Euphrates."  (NAS)

The four angels and their armies are released (Revelation 9:15-18):

15And the four angels, who had been prepared for the hour and day and month and year, were released, so that they might kill a third of mankind. 16And the number of the armies of the horsemen was two hundred million; I heard the number of them. (NAS)

Riders and horses in the angel's armies (Revelation 9:17-19):

And this is how I saw in the vision the horses and those who sat on them:

  • 17the riders had breastplates the color of fire and of hyacinth and of brimstone; and

  • the heads of the horses are like the heads of lions; and out of their mouths proceed fire and smoke and brimstone. 18A third of mankind was killed by these three plagues, by the fire and the smoke and the brimstone, which proceeded out of their mouths. 19For the power of the horses is in their mouths and in their tails; for their tails are like serpents and have heads; and with them they do harm. (NAS)

Those that were not killed by the angels and their armies (Revelation 9:20-21):

John then describes the remaining 2/3 of mankind (those that were not the bond-servants of God):

20And the rest of mankind, who were not killed by these plagues, did not repent of the works of their hands, so as not to worship demons, and the idols of gold and of silver and of brass and of stone and of wood, which can neither see nor hear nor walk; 21 and they did not repent of their murders nor of their sorceries nor of their immorality nor of their thefts. (NAS)

The small scroll (Revelation 10:1-11)

John received a small scroll or book from another powerful angel coming down from heaven.  John is told to eat the scroll and then that he must prophesy again about many races of people, nation, languages and rulers.

John told to measure and count (Revelation 11:1-3)

John was given a measuring rod and was told to measure the temple of God and the altar and to count the people worshiping there.

The two witnesses are killed (Revelation 11:1-10)

Power was given to the two witnesses standing before the Lord of the earth...power to stop the rain, to turn the waters into blood, and to smite the earth with every plague or trouble.  If a person tried to hurt them, fire would come from their mouths to kill their enemy.  When the two witnesses had finished telling their message, a beast or animal coming up from the bottomless pit killed them.  Their bodies lay in the street of the city where the Lord was killed.  People from the earth were happy that these two were killed, and they refused to bury them.

God lets life enter the two witnesses and they are called to heaven (Revelation 11:11-12)

After three and a half days God let life enter the two prophets again.  They stood on their feet.  All the people who saw them were filled with fear.  Then the two prophets heard a loud voice from heaven say, "Come up here!" And the two prophets went up into heaven in a cloud. Their enemies watched them go.

The Great Earthquake and the End of the 2nd Woe (Revelation 11:13-14)

At that same time there was a great earthquake. One tenth of the city was destroyed. And 7,000 people were killed in the earthquake. The people that did not die were very afraid. They gave glory to the God of heaven.

Revelation 11:14 - The second woe is past; behold, the third woe is coming quickly. (NAS)

The Third Woe:
(to those who are not the bond-servants of God)

The 24 Elders Bow, Worship and Say What Will Happen Next (Revelation 11:16-18)

And the twenty-four elders, who sit on their thrones before God, fell on their faces and worshiped God, 17 saying,

"We give Thee thanks, O Lord God, the Almighty, who art and who wast, because Thou hast taken Thy great power and hast begun to reign.

  • 18"And the nations were enraged, and

                                                     (NAS)

The Temple in Heaven is Opened (Revelation 11:19)

Then God's temple in heaven was opened. The holy box that holds the agreement that God gave to His people (the ark of the covenant) could be seen in his temple. Then there were flashes of lightning, noises, thunder, an earthquake, and a great hailstorm.
