Correct.
'But
I have this against you, that you have
left your first love. 5'Remember therefore from where you have
fallen, and repent and do the deeds you did at first; or else I am coming to
you, and will remove your lampstand out of its place-- unless you repent.
Revelation 2:4-5 (NAS)
They Left Their First Love:
The church in Ephesus had "left its first love." What was their first
love? The text doesn't say. The apostle Paul wrote to the Ephesians many years earlier and spoke to them
of love. He concluded the letter with these words:
"Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and
the Lord Jesus Christ. Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus
Christ with a love incorruptible." Ephesians 6:23-24 (NAS)
Had the Ephesians love for Christ gone cold...had it become corrupted?
Had they left their love for Christ? Again, the text doesn't say.
Jesus spoke about a first and greatest command:
"And he said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy
heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the great and
first commandment." Matthew 22:37-38 (ASV)
If
you do not repent:
In Revelation 2:5 above, Jesus warns them that, if
they do not repent from this, He would
"remove your lampstand out of its place..."
Even in the midst of the persecution that these
Christians were facing...Jesus still expects those
in His church to remain faithful to their first love
and to do the deeds that Jesus commands of all of
His followers.
As in Chapter 1, the instructions that Jesus
gives to His bond-servants (Christians) in the
Revelation are added below:
To the Christians
(to those in Jesus'
church...the bride of Christ): |
Who do what: |
Jesus Promises: |
Reference: |
Who read, hear and heed the words of this prophecy. |
He will be blessed. |
Revelation 1:3 |
Change your hearts and do the things you did at first.
|
If you don't change, I will come to you. I will take away
your lampstand from its place. |
Revelation 2:5 |
Is the greatest and first commandment in your life to love the Lord?
"Blessed is he who reads and those who hear the words of the prophecy,
and heed the things which are written in it; for the time is near."
Revelation 1:3 (NAS)
