Section 3A - Jesus' Love for His Church:

Read Ephesians 5:22-33 in your Bible or below. This passage begins by talking about the love between husband and wife.

Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body. 24 But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her; 26 that He might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, 27 that He might present to Himself the church in all her glory, having no spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that she should be holy and blameless. 28 So husbands ought also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his own wife loves himself; 29 for no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ also does the church, 30 because we are members of His body. 31 For this cause a man shall leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh. 32 This mystery is great; but I am speaking with reference to Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless let each individual among you also love his own wife even as himself; and let the wife see to it that she respect her husband. (NAS)

Question:

According to verse 32, the mystery about this passage is that it relates to what?

Husband & Wife Engaged Couples Christ & His Church

Other Translations - Ephesians 5:22-33:

Wives, be under the authority of (obey) your husbands, the same as the Lord. 23The husband is the head of the wife, the same as Christ is the head of the church. The church is Christ's body--Christ is the Savior of the body. 24The church is under the authority of Christ. So it is the same with you wives. You should be under the authority of your husbands in everything. 25Husbands, love your wives the same as Christ loved the church. Christ died for the church. 26He died to make the church holy. Christ used the telling of the Good News* to make the church clean by washing it with water. 27Christ died so that he could give the church to himself [like a bride] full of glory (beauty). He died so that the church could be pure and without fault, with no evil or sin or any other thing wrong in the church. 28And husbands should love their wives like that. They should love their wives like they love their own bodies. The man who loves his wife loves himself. 29Why? Because no person ever hates his own body. Every person feeds and takes care of his body. And that is what Christ does for the church, 30because we are parts of his body. 31[The Scripture says], "So a man will leave his father and mother and join his wife. And the two people will become one."* 32That secret truth is very important--I am talking about Christ and the church. 33But each one of you must love his wife like he loves himself. And a wife must respect her husband.  (ERV)

Wives, (be in subjection) unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, and Christ also is the head of the church, (being) himself the saviour of the body. 24 But as the church is subject to Christ, so (let) the wives also (be) to their husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself up for it; 26 that he might sanctify it, having cleansed it by the washing of water with the word, 27 that he might present the church to himself a glorious (church), not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. 28 Even so ought husbands also to love their own wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his own wife loveth himself: 29 for no man ever hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as Christ also the church; 30 because we are members of his body. 31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife; and the two shall become one flesh. 32 This mystery is great: but I speak in regard of Christ and of the church. 33 Nevertheless do ye also severally love each one his own wife even as himself; and (let) the wife (see) that she fear her husband. (ASV)

Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. 23 For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. 24 Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing. 25 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; 26 That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, 27 That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. 28 So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. 29 For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: 30 For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. 31 For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. 32 This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.
