When the apostle Paul wrote to the church (the bride of Christ) in the city of Corinth, he uses this same type of husband and wife relationship to describe the church's relationship to Jesus.

"For I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy; for I betrothed you to one husband, that to Christ I might present you as a pure virgin." 2 Corinthians 11:2 (NAS)
