Comfort or Paradise
 (Abraham's Bosom)

Although we might not be able to imagine the two places in detail...we do know that the poor man Lazarus went to a place of rest described as "Abraham's Bosom." The rich man, however, was in a place of torment. In this place of torment, the rich man could see and experience the following:

  • The rich man could see Lazarus in the place of rest:

"And in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torment, and saw Abraham far away, and Lazarus in his bosom." Luke 16:23 (NAS)

  • The rich man could cry for mercy:

"And he cried out and said, 'Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water and cool off my tongue; for I am in agony in this flame.' But Abraham said, 'Child, remember that during your life you received your good things, and likewise Lazarus bad things; but now he is being comforted here, and you are in agony." Luke 16:24-25 -- (NAS)

  • There was a great chasm that separated the two places:

'And besides all this, between us and you there is a great chasm fixed, in order that those who wish to come over from here to you may not be able, and that none may cross over from there to us.' Luke 16:26 (NAS)

Note: In the Greek, the word chasm is "chasma" meaning a great chasm or vacancy (an impassible interval or gulf).

How does it make you feel that we have an opportunity to decide before we die whether we go to this place of rest...or this place of torment (and that, after we die, we cannot cross from one side to another)?
