Other Translations - Luke 14:28-33:
"Suppose one of you wants to build a tower. Will he
not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if
he has enough money to complete it? For if he lays
the foundation and is not able to finish it,
everyone who sees it will ridicule him, saying,
'This fellow began to build and was not able to
finish.' "Or suppose a king is about to go to war
against another king. Will he not first sit down and
consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to
oppose the one coming against him with twenty
thousand? If he is not able, he will send a
delegation while the other is still a long way off
and will ask for terms of peace. In the same way,
any of you who does not give up everything he has
cannot be my disciple. (NIV)
"For which of you, intending to build a tower, does
not sit down first and count the cost, whether he
has enough to finish it-- "lest, after he has laid
the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who
see it begin to mock him, "saying, 'This man began
to build and was not able to finish.' "Or what king,
going to make war against another king, does not sit
down first and consider whether he is able with ten
thousand to meet him who comes against him with
twenty thousand? "Or else, while the other is still
a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks
conditions of peace. "So likewise, whoever of you
does not forsake all that he has cannot be My
disciple. (NKJ)
For which of you, desiring to build a tower, doth
not first sit down and count the cost, whether he
have (wherewith) to complete it? Lest haply, when he
hath laid a foundation, and is not able to finish,
all that behold begin to mock him, saying, This man
began to build, and was not able to finish. Or what
king, as he goeth to encounter another king in war,
will not sit down first and take counsel whether he
is able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh
against him with twenty thousand? Or else, while the
other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an
ambassage, and asketh conditions of peace. So
therefore whosoever he be of you that renounceth not
all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple. (ASV)
For which of you, intending to build a tower,
sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost,
whether he have sufficient to finish it? Lest haply,
after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able
to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,
Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to
finish. Or what king, going to make war against
another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth
whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him
that cometh against him with twenty thousand? Or
else, while the other is yet a great way off, he
sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of
peace. So likewise, whosoever he be of you that
forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my
disciple. (KJV)
