15:5-21:
He
took him outside and said, "Look up at the heavens
and count the stars-- if indeed you can count them."
Then he said to him, "So shall your offspring be."
Abram believed the LORD, and he credited it to him
as righteousness. He also said to him, "I am the
LORD, who brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans to
give you this land to take possession of it." But
Abram said, "O Sovereign LORD, how can I know that I
will gain possession of it?" So the LORD said to
him, "Bring me a heifer, a goat and a ram, each
three years old, along with a dove and a young
pigeon." Abram brought all these to him, cut them in
two and arranged the halves opposite each other; the
birds, however, he did not cut in half. Then birds
of prey came down on the carcasses, but Abram drove
them away. As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a
deep sleep, and a thick and dreadful darkness came
over him. Then the LORD said to him, "Know for
certain that your descendants will be strangers in a
country not their own, and they will be enslaved and
mistreated four hundred years. But I will punish the
nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will
come out with great possessions. You, however, will
go to your fathers in peace and be buried at a good
old age. In the fourth generation your descendants
will come back here, for the sin of the Amorites has
not yet reached its full measure." When the sun had
set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with
a blazing torch appeared and passed between the
pieces. On that day the LORD made a covenant with
Abram and said, "To your descendants I give this
land, from the river of Egypt to the great river,
the Euphrates-- the land of the Kenites, Kenizzites,
Kadmonites, Hittites, Perizzites, Rephaites,
Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites." (NIV)
Then
He brought him outside and said, "Look now toward
heaven, and count the stars if you are able to
number them." And He said to him, "So shall your
descendants be." And he believed in the LORD, and He
accounted it to him for righteousness. Then He said
to him, "I am the LORD, who brought you out of Ur of
the Chaldeans, to give you this land to inherit it."
And he said, "Lord GOD, how shall I know that I will
inherit it?" So He said to him, "Bring Me a
three-year-old heifer, a three-year-old female goat,
a three-year-old ram, a turtledove, and a young
pigeon." Then he brought all these to Him and cut
them in two, down the middle, and placed each piece
opposite the other; but he did not cut the birds in
two. And when the vultures came down on the
carcasses, Abram drove them away. Now when the sun
was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and
behold, horror and great darkness fell upon him.
Then He said to Abram: "Know certainly that your
descendants will be strangers in a land that is not
theirs, and will serve them, and they will afflict
them four hundred years. "And also the nation whom
they serve I will judge; afterward they shall come
out with great possessions. "Now as for you, you
shall go to your fathers in peace; you shall be
buried at a good old age. "But in the fourth
generation they shall return here, for the iniquity
of the Amorites is not yet complete." And it came to
pass, when the sun went down and it was dark, that
behold, there appeared a smoking oven and a burning
torch that passed between those pieces. On the same
day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying: "To
your descendants I have given this land, from the
river of Egypt to the great river, the River
Euphrates-- "the Kenites, the Kenezzites, and the
Kadmonites, "the Hittites, the Perizzites, and the
Rephaim,"the Amorites, the Canaanites, the
Girgashites, and the Jebusites." (NKJ)
And
he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now
toward heaven, and number the stars, if thou be able
to number them. And he said unto him, So shall thy
seed be. And he believed in Jehovah. And he reckoned
it to him for righteousness. And he said unto him, I
am Jehovah that brought thee out of Ur of the
Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it. And
he said, O Lord Jehovah, whereby shall I know that I
shall inherit it? And he said unto him, Take me a
heifer three years old, and a she-goat three years
old, and a ram three years old, and a turtle-dove,
and a young pigeon. And he took him all these, and
divided them in the midst, and laid each half over
against the other. But the birds divided he not. And
the birds of prey came down upon the carcasses, and
Abram drove them away. And when the sun was going
down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram. And, lo, a
horror of great darkness fell upon him. And he said
unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be
sojourners in a land that is not theirs, and shall
serve them. And they shall afflict them four hundred
years. And also that nation, whom they shall serve,
will I judge. And afterward shall they come out with
great substance. But thou shalt go to thy fathers in
peace. Thou shalt be buried in a good old age. And
in the fourth generation they shall come hither
again. For the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet
full. And it came to pass, that, when the sun went
down, and it was dark, behold, a smoking furnace,
and a flaming torch that passed between these
pieces. In that day Jehovah made a covenant with
Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land,
from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the
river Euphrates. The Kenite, and the Kenizzite, and
the Kadmonite, and the Hittite, and the Perizzite,
and the Rephaim, and the Amorite, and the Canaanite,
and the Girgashite, and the Jebusite. (ASV)
