The Promise of the Holy Spirit is Fulfilled:

The Day of Pentecost is on a Sunday...50 days after the Jewish Passover.  Jesus was crucified a few days before the Passover Sabbath.  Acts 2 records the events of the day of Pentecost in the city of Jerusalem.  Although we will look at the specific events of that day later in this lesson, we focus now on part of what Peter said to the crowd that was gathered:

"But Peter, taking his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and declared to them: "Men of Judea, and all you who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and give heed to my words. For these men are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only the third hour of the day; but this is what was spoken of through the prophet Joel: 'And it shall be in the last days,' God says, 'That I will pour forth of My Spirit upon all mankind; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams..." Acts 2:14-17 (NAS)

Question:

According to Acts 2:14-16, which prophecy was starting to be fulfilled on that day?

  1. The prophecy of the coming Messiah.
  2. The prophecy of the end of the world.
  3. The prophecy that God would pour forth His Spirit.

Other Translations - Acts 2:14-16:

Then Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice and addressed the crowd: "Fellow Jews and all of you who live in Jerusalem, let me explain this to you; listen carefully to what I say.  These men are not drunk, as you suppose. It's only nine in the morning!  No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: "'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams." (NIV)

But Peter, standing up with the eleven, raised his voice and said to them, "Men of Judea and all who dwell in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and heed my words.  "For these are not drunk, as you suppose, since it is only the third hour of the day.  "But this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel:  'And it shall come to pass in the last days, says God, that I will pour out of My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your young men shall see visions, your old men shall dream dreams. (NKJ)

But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and spake forth unto them, (saying), Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and give ear unto my words.  For these are not drunken, as ye suppose; seeing it is (but) the third hour of the day.  but this is that which hath been spoken through the prophet Joel: And it shall be in the last days, saith God, I will pour forth of my Spirit upon all flesh: And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, And your young men shall see visions, And your old men shall dream dreams: (ASV)

But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words:  For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.  But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel; And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams: (KJV)
