How the Spirit is to be Poured Out on All Mankind:

Let's look again at the reaction to Peter's gospel message on the Day of Pentecost:

Now when they heard this they were pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?" 38 And Peter said to them, "Repent, and let each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 "For the promise is for you and your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God shall call to Himself." Acts 2:37-39 (NAS)   

Question:

Those that heard the gospel message and believed asked the apostles what they should do.  According to Acts 2:38...what were they told to do to receive forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit?

  1. Nothing. Everyone is saved and will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit regardless of what they believe or do.
  2. Just say a prayer.
  3. Repent (change your heart, mind and actions) from sin and be baptized* for the forgiveness of sins and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

* The english word "baptized" is from the Greek word "baptizo" meaning to immerse or dip.

When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" 38 Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off-- for all whom the Lord our God will call." Now when they heard (this,) they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and the rest of the apostles, Brethren, what shall we do? 38 And Peter (said) unto them, Repent ye, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ unto the remission of your sins; and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For to you is the promise, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, (even) as many as the Lord our God shall call unto him. (ASV)
