Use of the Word "Faith" in the
Old Testament:
King James Version
The King James Version
(KJV) of the Bible was one of the earliest English
translations. In that translation, the word "faith" only appears two times
in the KJV Old Testament (Deuteronomy 32:20 and Habakkuk 2:4):
- "And he said, I will hide my face from them, I will see what
their end shall be: for they are a very froward generation, children in whom
is no faith." Deuteronomy 32:20 (KJV)
- "Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just
shall live by his faith." Habakkuk 2:4 (KJV)
In the KJV Old Testament, "faithfulness" appears 19 times; "faithfully" 7
times; "faithful" 28 times; and "unfaithful" 1 time.
The word "faithless" is not used.
We will look at these words later in this lesson.
New American Standard Version
The New American Standard (NAS) version of the Bible
(considered one of the most literal translations) is one of the more recent
translations. Since the King James translation, many more ancient Old
Testament manuscripts were discovered by archaeologists. These newer
translations use many of these more ancient manuscripts.
In the NAS translation, the word "faith" appears four
times in the NAS Old Testament (Deuteronomy 32:51, Job 39:12, Psalm 146:6, and
Habakkuk 2:4):
-
"...because you broke faith with Me in the midst of the sons
of Israel at the waters of Meribah-kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin, because you
did not treat Me as holy in the midst of the sons of Israel." Deuteronomy
32:51
-
"...Will you have faith in him that he will return your
grain, and gather it from your threshing floor?" Job 39:12
-
"Who made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them;
who keeps faith forever..." Psalm 146:6
-
"Behold, as for the proud one, His soul is not right within
him; but the righteous will live by his faith." Habakkuk 2:4
In the NAS Old Testament, "faithfulness" appears 38 times;
"faithfully" 14 times; "faithful" 30 times; "unfaithful" 19 times; and
"faithless" 10 times. We will look at these words later in this lesson.
New International Version
The New International
Version (NIV) of the Bible is not considered a highly literal translation as
it adds or changes words from the original texts in an effort to
make the results more readable. The word "faith" appears 16 times
in the NIV Old Testament. In the NIV Old Testament, "faithfulness" appears
54 times; "faithfully" 17 times; "faithful" 41 times; "unfaithful" 50 times; and
"faithless" 11 times. We will look at these words later in this lesson.
