Read Chapter 14Chapter 14:  The Lamb stands on Mount Zion:

The Lamb (Jesus) was standing on Mount Zion.  Although Mount Zion is physically in the country of Israel and is often used as a geographical reference to the area around Jerusalem, the name was also used in scripture in a figurative sense to describe the heavenly city of God...the new Jerusalem.  For example, let's look at Hebrews chapter 12:

New American Standard Version of the BibleBut you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels, to the general assembly and church of the first-born who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the Judge of all, and to the spirits of righteous men made perfect, Hebrews 12:22-23 (NAS)

Let's continue looking at Revelation chapter 14:

New American Standard Version of the BibleAnd I looked, and behold, the Lamb was standing on Mount Zion, and with Him one hundred and forty-four thousand, having His name and the name of His Father written on their foreheads. 2And I heard a voice from heaven, like the sound of many waters and like the sound of loud thunder, and the voice which I heard was like the sound of harpists playing on their harps. 3And they sang a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders; and no one could learn the song except the one hundred and forty-four thousand who had been purchased from the earth. 4These are the ones who have not been defiled with women, for they have kept themselves chaste. These are the ones who follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These have been purchased from among men as first fruits to God and to the Lamb. 5And no lie was found in their mouth; they are blameless. Revelation 14:1-5 (NAS)

Question:

At the beginning of Chapter 14, John sees the Lamb (Jesus) standing on Mount Zion.  With Jesus are the ones who had the seal on their foreheads (the 144,000) and are described as follows:.

  1. Having the name of the Lamb and His Father written on their foreheads (verse 1).

  2. They sang a new song before the throne, the four living creatures and the elders (verse 3).

  3. No man could learn the song except this group that had been purchased or redeemed from the earth. (verse 3)

  4. These had not been defiled with women...these men were virgins. (verse 4).

  5. They follow the Lamb wherever He goes. (verse 4)

  6. In their mouth there were found no lies; they are without fault or blemish. (verse 5)

According to Revelation 14:4, these were purchased from among men to be what?

Other Translations - Revelation 14:1-5:

Easy-to-Read Version of the BibleThen I looked, and there before me was the Lamb. He was standing on Mount Zion. There were 144,000 people with him. They all had his name and his Father's name written on their foreheads. 2And I heard a sound from heaven like the noise of flooding water and like the sound of loud thunder. The sound I heard was like people playing their harps. 3The people sang a new song before the throne and before the four living things and the elders. The only people that could learn the new song were the 144,000 who had been redeemed (saved) from the earth. No one else could learn the song.  4These 144,000 people are the ones who did not do wrong things with women. They kept themselves pure. They follow the Lamb every place he goes. These 144,000 were redeemed (saved) from among the people of the earth. They are the first people to be offered to God and the Lamb.  5These people were not guilty of telling lies. They are without fault. (ERV)

American Standard Version of the BibleAnd I saw, and behold, the Lamb standing on the mount Zion, and with him a hundred and forty and four thousand, having his name, and the name of his Father, written on their foreheads. 2And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and the voice which I heard (was) as (the voice) of harpers harping with their harps: 3and they sing as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four living creatures and the elders: and no man could learn the song save the hundred and forty and four thousand, (even) they that had been purchased out of the earth. 4These are they that were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These (are) they that follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were purchased from among men, (to be) the firstfruits unto God and unto the Lamb. 5And in their mouth was found no lie: they are without blemish. (ASV)

King James Version of the BibleAnd I looked, and, lo, a Lamb stood on the mount Sion, and with him an hundred forty and four thousand, having his Father's name written in their foreheads. 2And I heard a voice from heaven, as the voice of many waters, and as the voice of a great thunder: and I heard the voice of harpers harping with their harps: 3And they sung as it were a new song before the throne, and before the four beasts, and the elders: and no man could learn that song but the hundred and forty and four thousand, which were redeemed from the earth. 4These are they which were not defiled with women; for they are virgins. These are they which follow the Lamb whithersoever he goeth. These were redeemed from among men, being the firstfruits unto God and to the Lamb. 5And in their mouth was found no guile: for they are without fault before the throne of God. (KJV)
