The Kingdom: It's Mission and Purpose
"Jesus said to them, "My food is to do
the will of Him who sent Me, and to accomplish His
work. "Do you not say, 'There are yet four months,
and then comes the harvest'? Behold, I say to you,
lift up your eyes, and look on the fields, that they
are white for harvest." John 4:34-35 (NAS)
"For the Son of
Man has come to seek and to save that which was
lost." Luke 19:10(NAS)
"Do not think
that I came to bring peace on the earth; I did not
come to bring peace, but a sword." Matthew
10:34 (NAS)
"And take the
helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit,
which is the word of God." Ephesians 6:17 (NAS)
"For the word
of God is living and active and sharper than any
two-edged sword, and piercing as far as the division
of soul and spirit, of both joints and marrow, and
able to judge the thoughts and intentions of the
heart." Hebrews 4:12 (NAS)
"Do not think
that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I
did not come to abolish, but to fulfill."
Matthew 5:17 (NAS)
"But
before faith came, we were kept in custody under the
law, being shut up to the faith which was later to
be revealed. Therefore the Law has become our tutor
to lead us to Christ, that we may be justified by
faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer
under a tutor. For you are all sons of God through
faith in Christ Jesus. For all of you who were
baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with
Christ. Galatians 3:23-27 (NAS)
What was the mission given to Jesus' disciples
after Jesus rose from the grave?
"Go therefore and make disciples of all
the nations, baptizing them in the name of the
Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching
them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I
am with you always, even to the end of the age."
Matthew 28:19-20 (NAS)
"And He said
to them, "Go into all the world and preach the
gospel to all creation. "He who has believed and has
been baptized shall be saved; but he who has
disbelieved shall be condemned." Mark 16:15-16 (NAS)
"Then He
opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and
He said to them, "Thus it is written, that the
Christ should suffer and rise again from the dead
the third day; and that repentance for forgiveness
of sins should be proclaimed in His name to all the
nations, beginning from Jerusalem. "You are
witnesses of these things. "And behold, I am sending
forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are
to stay in the city until you are clothed with power
from on high." Luke 24:45-49 (NAS)
When did the disciples first begin doing this
mission?
Disciples are clothed with power:
(Note: this was in Jerusalem, a few days after
Jesus ascended into heaven) -- "And when the day of
Pentecost had come, they were all together in one
place. And suddenly there came from heaven a noise
like a violent, rushing wind, and it filled the
whole house where they were sitting. And there
appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing
themselves, and they rested on each one of them. And
they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began
to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit was
giving them utterance. Acts 2:1-4 (NAS)
The
gospel is preached:
Read
Acts 2:14-36 (excerpts follow): 14 But Peter, taking
his stand with the eleven, raised his voice and
declared to them: "Men of Judea, and all you who
live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and
give heed to my words...verse 22-24..."Men of
Israel, listen to these words: Jesus the Nazarene, a
man attested to you by God with miracles and wonders
and signs which God performed through Him in your
midst, just as you yourselves know-- 36... this Man
delivered up by the predetermined plan and
foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the
hands of godless men and put Him to death. "And God
raised Him up again, putting an end to the agony of
death, since it was impossible for Him to be held in
its power. (NAS)
Some
choose to obey the gospel and receive the promise:
"Now when they heard this they were
pierced to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest
of the apostles, "Brethren, what shall we do?" And
Peter said to them, "Repent, and let each of you be
baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the
forgiveness of your sins; and you shall receive the
gift of the Holy Spirit. "For the promise is for you
and your children, and for all who are far off, as
many as the Lord our God shall call to Himself." And
with many other words he solemnly testified and kept
on exhorting them, saying, "Be saved from this
perverse generation!" So then, those who had
received his word were baptized; and there were
added that day about three thousand souls. Acts
2:37-47 (NAS)
The
Lord adds them to His church:
"So then, those who had received his word
were baptized; and there were added that day about
three thousand souls. And they were continually
devoting themselves to the apostles' teaching and to
fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
And everyone kept feeling a sense of awe; and many
wonders and signs were taking place through the
apostles. And all those who had believed were
together, and had all things in common; and they
began selling their property and possessions, and
were sharing them with all, as anyone might have
need. And day by day continuing with one mind in the
temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they
were taking their meals together with gladness and
sincerity of heart, praising God, and having favor
with all the people. And the Lord was adding to
their number day by day those who were being saved."
Acts 2:41-47 (NAS)
What did the disciples teach these first members
of the Lord's church?
Jesus said "Go therefore and make
disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,
teaching them to observe all that I commanded you;
and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the
age." Matthew 28:19-20 (NAS)
Question:
In light of the scriptures
above, what should all members of Jesus' church be
taught to do when they become Christians?
-
Whatever that individual
Christian wants to do.
-
All that Jesus commanded
His disciples in scripture.
-
Just follow the crowd.
