Correct.
16And Simon Peter
answered and said, "Thou art the Christ, the Son of
the living God." 17And Jesus answered and
said to him, "Blessed are you, Simon Barjona,
because flesh and blood did not reveal this to you,
but My Father who is in heaven. 18"And I
also say to you that you are Peter (petros), and
upon this
rock (petra) I will build My church; and the gates of Hades
shall not overpower it. Matthew 16:16, 18 (NAS)
God (Jesus' Father) had revealed to
Peter that Jesus was "the Christ, the Son of the
living God." This is the "mass of
rock" that Jesus' church would be built
upon.
Jesus is described by
Paul and by Peter as the "Mass of Rock" - "Petra":
Romans 9:33, referring to Jesus Christ, says:
"...just as it is written,
"Behold, I lay in Zion a stone of stumbling and a
rock (petra) of offense, and he who believes in Him
will not be disappointed." Romans 9:33 (NAS)
1 Peter 2:4-8, referring to Jesus Christ, says:
"And coming to Him as to a
living stone, rejected by men, but choice and
precious in the sight of God, you also, as living
stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for
a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices
acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For this is
contained in Scripture: "Behold I lay in Zion a
choice stone, a precious corner stone and he who
believes in Him shall not be disappointed." This
precious value, then, is for you who believe. But
for those who disbelieve, "The stone which the
builders rejected, this became the very corner
stone, and, "A stone of stumbling and a rock (petra)
of offense"; for they stumble because they are
disobedient to the word, and to this doom they were
also appointed." 1 Peter 2:4-8 (NAS)
In Hebrews 1:8, God calls His
son Jesus "God". How do you feel about
Jesus being the Rock or cornerstone of His church?
