Other Translations - Galatians
3:17-29:
What
I mean is this: The law, introduced 430 years later,
does not set aside the covenant previously
established by God and thus do away with the
promise. For if the inheritance depends on the law,
then it no longer depends on a promise; but God in
his grace gave it to Abraham through a promise.
What, then, was the purpose of the law? It was added
because of transgressions until the Seed to whom the
promise referred had come. The law was put into
effect through angels by a mediator. A mediator,
however, does not represent just one party; but God
is one. Is the law, therefore, opposed to the
promises of God? Absolutely not! For if a law had
been given that could impart life, then
righteousness would certainly have come by the law.
But the Scripture declares that the whole world is a
prisoner of sin, so that what was promised, being
given through faith in Jesus Christ, might be given
to those who believe. Before this faith came, we
were held prisoners by the law, locked up until
faith should be revealed. So the law was put in
charge to lead us to Christ that we might be
justified by faith. Now that faith has come, we are
no longer under the supervision of the law. You are
all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for
all of you who were baptized into Christ have
clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew
nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you
are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to
Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs
according to the promise. (NIV)
And
this I say, that the law, which was four hundred and
thirty years later, cannot annul the covenant that
was confirmed before by God in Christ, that it
should make the promise of no effect. For if the
inheritance is of the law, it is no longer of
promise; but God gave it to Abraham by promise. What
purpose then does the law serve? It was added
because of transgressions, till the Seed should come
to whom the promise was made; and it was appointed
through angels by the hand of a mediator. Now a
mediator does not mediate for one only, but God is
one. Is the law then against the promises of God?
Certainly not! For if there had been a law given
which could have given life, truly righteousness
would have been by the law. But the Scripture has
confined all under sin, that the promise by faith in
Jesus Christ might be given to those who believe.
But before faith came, we were kept under guard by
the law, kept for the faith which would afterward be
revealed. Therefore the law was our tutor to bring
us to Christ, that we might be justified by faith.
But after faith has come, we are no longer under a
tutor. For you are all sons of God through faith in
Christ Jesus. For as many of you as were baptized
into Christ have put on Christ. There is neither Jew
nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is
neither male nor female; for you are all one in
Christ Jesus. And if you are Christ's, then you are
Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Now
this I say: A covenant confirmed beforehand by God,
the law, which came four hundred and thirty years
after, doth not disannul, so as to make the promise
of none effect. For if the inheritance is of the
law, it is no more of promise: but God hath granted
it to Abraham by promise. What then is the law? It
was added because of transgressions, till the seed
should come to whom the promise hath been made; (and
it was) ordained through angels by the hand of a
mediator. Now a mediator is not (a mediator) of one;
but God is one. Is the law then against the promises
of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law
given which could make alive, verily righteousness
would have been of the law. But the scriptures shut
up all things under sin, that the promise by faith
in Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe.
But before faith came, we were kept in ward under
the law, shut up unto the faith which should
afterwards be revealed. So that the law is become
our tutor (to bring us) unto Christ, that we might
be justified by faith. But now faith that is come,
we are no longer under a tutor. For ye are all sons
of God, through faith, in Christ Jesus. For as many
of you as were baptized into Christ did put on
Christ. There can be neither Jew nor Greek, there
can be neither bond nor free, there can be no male
and female; for ye all are one (man) in Christ
Jesus. And if ye are Christ's, then are ye Abraham's
seed, heirs according to promise. (ASV)
And
this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed
before of God in Christ, the law, which was four
hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul,
that it should make the promise of none effect. For
if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of
promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise.
Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because
of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom
the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels
in the hand of a mediator. Now a mediator is not a
mediator of one, but God is one. Is the law then
against the promises of God? God forbid: for if
there had been a law given which could have given
life, verily righteousness should have been by the
law. But the scripture hath concluded all under sin,
that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be
given to them that believe. But before faith came,
we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith
which should afterwards be revealed. Wherefore the
law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ,
that we might be justified by faith. But after that
faith is come, we are no longer under a
schoolmaster. For ye are all the children of God by
faith in Christ Jesus. For as many of you as have
been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. There
is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor
free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are
all one in Christ Jesus. And if ye be Christ's, then
are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the
promise. (KJV) |
