Before Acts 2:  To Whom Was the Holy Spirit Given and Why?

Genesis chapter 1 to Acts 1 - Why Was the Spirit Given?

We can see through the previous examples that the Spirit was given to only certain individuals during this timeframe.  And we can see the impact or influence that the Spirit had on these people's lives.

Following are some additional scriptures that talk specifically about why the Spirit was given during this time before Acts chapter 2:

"And Thou didst give Thy good Spirit to instruct them, Thy manna Thou didst not withhold from their mouth, and Thou didst give them water for their thirst." Nehemiah 9:20 (NAS)

"Teach me to do Thy will, for Thou art my God; let Thy good Spirit lead me on level ground." Psalms 143:10 (NAS)

"Seek from the book of the LORD, and read: not one of these will be missing; none will lack its mate. For His mouth has commanded, and His Spirit has gathered them." Isaiah 34:16 (NAS)

"Come near to me, listen to this: from the first I have not spoken in secret, from the time it took place, I was there. And now the Lord GOD has sent me, and His Spirit." Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; "I am the LORD your God, who teaches you to profit, who leads you in the way you should go." Isaiah 48:16-17 (NAS)

"And as for Me, this is My covenant with them," says the LORD: "My Spirit which is upon you, and My words which I have put in your mouth, shall not depart from your mouth, nor from the mouth of your offspring, nor from the mouth of your offspring's offspring," says the LORD, "from now and forever." Isaiah 59:21 (NAS)

"The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to captives, and freedom to prisoners;" Isaiah 61:1 (NAS)

"And I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances." Ezekiel 36:27 (NAS)

'As for the promise which I made you when you came out of Egypt, My Spirit is abiding in your midst; do not fear!' Haggai 2:5 (NAS)

"And they made their hearts {like} flint so that they could not hear the law and the words which the LORD of hosts had sent by His Spirit through the former prophets; therefore great wrath came from the LORD of hosts." Zechariah 7:12 (NAS)
