Examples of Faith - Jesus' Disciples Having Little Faith:

The third time that the word "faith" is mentioned in the New Testament is at the end of Matthew chapter 8:

"And when He (Jesus) got into the boat, His disciples followed Him. 24 And behold, there arose a great storm in the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves; but He Himself was asleep. 25 And they came to Him, and awoke Him, saying, "Save us, Lord; we are perishing!" 26 And He said to them, "Why are you timid, you men of little faith?" Then He arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and it became perfectly calm. 27 And the men marveled, saying, "What kind of a man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?"  Matthew 8:23-27 (Note: This story is also repeated in Mark 4:35-41 and Luke 8:22-25)

Question:

According to Matthew 8:23-27, why did Jesus refer to His disciples as having "little faith?"

  1. In the midst of a great storm on the sea of Galilee, they were afraid of being lost...they were timid...they awoke Jesus asking Him to save them.
  2. In the midst of the great storm, they had assurance and confidence in Jesus that they would be alright...even if Jesus was asleep.
  3. In the midst of the great storm, they knew that their own strength, education and experience would save them.

1. Afraid & Timid 2. Confident in Jesus 3. Self-Reliant

Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. 27 The men were amazed and asked, "What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him." (NIV)
