"Faith" in The Book of Hebrews (continued):

In Hebrews chapter 10, the writer gives us some additional insight into faith:

"Since therefore, brethren, we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; 24 and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another and all the more, as you see the day drawing near." Hebrews 10:19-25

This lesson on faith assumes that you have completed Lesson 1 - The Gospel of Jesus Christ.  Completion of lesson 1 will be helpful in your understanding of Hebrews and the other books in the Bible.

Let's look closer at Hebrews 10:19-25:

  • We can have confidence to enter the holy place because of the blood of Jesus (verse 19):

"...yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach..." Colossians 1:22 (NAS)

  • Jesus came in the flesh...and offered his body on the cross.  Through His death, He inaugurated a new covenant...a new and living way (verse 20)...not like the Law of Moses -- the Old Covenant:

"And for this reason He (Jesus) is the mediator of a new covenant, in order that since a death has taken place for the redemption of the transgressions that were committed under the first covenant, those who have been called may receive the promise of the eternal inheritance. 16 For where a covenant is, there must of necessity be the death of the one who made it." Hebrews 9:15-16 (NAS)

  • Jesus is now our great High Priest over the house of God (verse 21):

"Therefore, holy brethren, partakers of a heavenly calling, consider Jesus, the Apostle and High Priest of our confession." Hebrews 3:1 (NAS)

  • Since Jesus is our great high priest, let us draw near (to God) (verse 22):

    • With a "sincere heart"

    • In "full assurance of faith"

    • Having our "hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience, and"

    • Having our "bodies washed with pure water"

  • As a result, let us (verses 23-25):

    • Hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering (for He who promised is faithful)

    • Consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds

    • Not forsake our own assembling together

    • Encourage one another and especially as you see the day drawing near.

He Who Promised is Faithful:

Hebrews 10:23 says that we are to "hold fast the confession of our hope; for He who promised is faithful."  God was faithful to His promise by the things that He did for us:  Jesus died for us.  In His death, He inaugurated the new and living way (the new covenant).  In addition, He became our great High Priest.

Question:

According to Hebrews 10:22 above, we may draw near to God if we have what?  (give the best answer)

  1. A sincere heart
  2. Full assurance of faith
  3. Hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water
  4. All of the above

Sincere Heart Assurance of Faith Heart/ Body Washed All Of The Above

Other Translations - Hebrews 10:19-25:

Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way opened for us through the curtain, that is, his body, 21 and since we have a great priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. 25 Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another-- and all the more as you see the Day approaching. (NIV)

Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 by a new and living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, 21 and having a High Priest over the house of God, 22 let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, 25 not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the Day approaching. (NKJ)

Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holy place by the blood of Jesus, 20 by the way which he dedicated for us, a new and living way, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; 21 and (having) a great priest over the house of God; 22 let us draw near with a true heart in fulness of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience: and having our body washed with pure water, 23 let us hold fast the confession of our hope that it waver not; for he is faithful that promised: 24 and let us consider one another to provoke unto love and good works; 25 not forsaking our own assembling together, as the custom of some is, but exhorting (one another); and so much the more, as ye see the day drawing nigh. (ASV)

Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, 20 By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh; 21 And having an high priest over the house of God; 22 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. 23 Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) 24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: 25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.
