The Glory of God Lights Our Path:
In the Old Testament, the glory of God appeared
primarily as a brilliant light. God guided the
people of Israel through the wilderness with a cloud
by day and a pillar of fire by night. The
following scriptures show the importance of God,
Christ and their glory in continuing to light our path,
both physically and spiritually:
"For
Thou art my lamp, O LORD; and the LORD illumines my
darkness." 2 Samuel 22:29 (NAS)
"For Thou dost light my lamp;
the LORD my God illumines my darkness." Psalm
18:28 (NAS)
"Thy word is a lamp to my feet,
and a light to my path." Psalm 119:105 (NAS)
"For the commandment is a lamp,
and the teaching is light; and reproofs for
discipline are the way of life," Proverbs 6:23 (NAS)
"Oh that I were as in months
gone by, as in the days when God watched over me;
When His lamp shone over my head, and by His light I
walked through darkness;" Job 29:2-3 (NAS)
"...and leaving Nazareth, He
came and settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea,
in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. This was to
fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet,
saying, "The land of Zebulun and the land of
Naphtali, by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan,
Galilee of the Gentiles-- "The people who were
sitting in darkness saw a great light, and to those
who were sitting in the land and shadow of death,
upon them a light dawned." Matthew 4:13-16 (A
prophecy fulfilled about Christ -- NAS)
Simeon, referring to Christ:
"And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem whose name
was Simeon; and this man was righteous and devout,
looking for the consolation of Israel; and the Holy
Spirit was upon him. And it had been revealed to him
by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death
before he had seen the Lord's Christ. And he came in
the Spirit into the temple; and when the parents
brought in the child Jesus, to carry out for Him the
custom of the Law, then he took Him into his arms,
and blessed God, and said, "Now Lord, Thou dost let
Thy bond-servant depart In peace, according to Thy
word; For my eyes have seen Thy salvation, Which
Thou hast prepared in the presence of all peoples, A
light of revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory
of Thy people Israel." Luke 2:25-32 (NAS)
"In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He
was in the beginning with God. All things came into
being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into
being that has come into being. In Him was life, and
the life was the light of men. And the light shines
in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend
it." ... 9 There was the true light
which, coming into the world, enlightens every man.
John 1:1-5, 9 (referring to the Word, who is Jesus
Christ -- NAS)
"For God did not send the Son
into the world to judge the world, but that the
world should be saved through Him. "He who believes
in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has
been judged already, because he has not believed in
the name of the only begotten Son of God. "And this
is the judgment, that the light is come into the
world, and men loved the darkness rather than the
light; for their deeds were evil. "For everyone who
does evil hates the light, and does not come to the
light, lest his deeds should be exposed. "But he who
practices the truth comes to the light, that his
deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in
God." John 3:17-21 (NAS)
"Again therefore Jesus spoke to
them, saying, "I am the light of the world; he who
follows Me shall not walk in the darkness, but shall
have the light of life." John 8:12 (NAS)
"Jesus answered, "It was
neither that this man sinned, nor his parents; but
it was in order that the works of God might be
displayed in him. "We must work the works of Him who
sent Me, as long as it is day; night is coming, when
no man can work. "While I am in the world, I am the
light of the world." John 9:3-5 (NAS)
"Jesus therefore said to them,
"For a little while longer the light is among you.
Walk while you have the light, that darkness may not
overtake you; he who walks in the darkness does not
know where he goes. "While you have the light,
believe in the light, in order that you may become
sons of light." These things Jesus spoke, and He
departed and hid Himself from them." John 12:35-36
(NAS)
"And Jesus cried out and said,
"He who believes in Me does not believe in Me, but
in Him who sent Me. "And he who beholds Me beholds
the One who sent Me. "I have come as light into the
world, that everyone who believes in Me may not
remain in darkness. "And if anyone hears My
sayings, and does not keep them, I do not judge him;
for I did not come to judge the world, but to save
the world. "He who rejects Me, and does not receive
My sayings, has one who judges him; the word I spoke
is what will judge him at the last day. "For I did
not speak on My own initiative, but the Father
Himself who sent Me has given Me commandment, what
to say, and what to speak. "And I know that His
commandment is eternal life; therefore the things I
speak, I speak just as the Father has told Me."
John 12:44-50 (NAS)
"...that the Christ was to
suffer, and that by reason of His resurrection from
the dead He should be the first to proclaim light
both to the Jewish people and to the Gentiles." Acts
26:23 --(NAS)
"For we do not preach ourselves
but Christ Jesus as Lord, and ourselves as your
bond-servants for Jesus' sake. For God, who said,
"Light shall shine out of darkness," is the One who
has shone in our hearts to give the light of the
knowledge of the glory of God in the face of
Christ." 2 Corinthians 4:5-6 (NAS)
"And this is the message we
have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is
light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. If we
say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in
the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth;
but if we walk in the light as He Himself is in the
light, we have fellowship with one another, and the
blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. If
we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving
ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess
our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us
our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a
liar, and His word is not in us." 1 John 1:5-10 (NAS)
"On the other hand, I am
writing a new commandment to you, which is true in
Him and in you, because the darkness is passing
away, and the true light is already shining. The one
who says he is in the light and yet hates his
brother is in the darkness until now. The one who
loves his brother abides in the light and there is
no cause for stumbling in him. But the one who hates
his brother is in the darkness and walks in the
darkness, and does not know where he is going
because the darkness has blinded his eyes." 1 John
2:8-11 (NAS)
And so we have the prophetic
word made more sure, to which you do well to pay
attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place,
until the day dawns and the morning star arises in
your hearts. But know this first of all, that no
prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one's own
interpretation, for no prophecy was ever made by an
act of human will, but men moved by the Holy Spirit
spoke from God. 2 Peter 1:19-21 (NAS)
