True Christians Receive the
Spirit:
As a Pledge of Their Inheritance as Children of God
"For
you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to
fear again, but you have received a spirit of
adoption as sons by which we cry out, "Abba!
Father!" The Spirit Himself bears witness with our
spirit that we are children of God, and if children,
heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with
Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him in order that
we may also be glorified with Him." Romans 8:15-17
(NAS)
"And not only this, but also we
ourselves, having the first fruits of the Spirit,
even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting
eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of
our body." Romans 8:23 (NAS)
"Now He who establishes us with
you in Christ and anointed us is God, who also
sealed us and gave us the Spirit in our hearts as a
pledge." 2 Corinthians 1:21-22 (NAS)
"For indeed while we are in
this tent, we groan, being burdened, because we do
not want to be unclothed, but to be clothed, in
order that what is mortal may be swallowed up by
life. Now He who prepared us for this very purpose
is God, who gave to us the Spirit as a pledge." 2
Corinthians 5:4-5 (NAS)
"But when the fulness of the
time came, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman,
born under the Law, in order that He might redeem
those who were under the Law, that we might receive
the adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God
has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into our
hearts, crying, "Abba! Father!" Therefore you are no
longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an
heir through God." Galatians 4:4-7 (NAS)
"In Him, you also, after
listening to the message of truth, the gospel of
your salvation-- having also believed, you were
sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, who
is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view
to the redemption of God's own possession, to the
praise of His glory." Ephesians 1:13-14 (NAS)
"Beloved, do not be surprised
at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you
for your testing, as though some strange thing were
happening to you; but to the degree that you share
the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing; so that
also at the revelation of His glory, you may rejoice
with exultation. If you are reviled for the name of
Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory
and of God rests upon you. By no means let any of
you suffer as a murderer, or thief, or evildoer, or
a troublesome meddler; but if anyone suffers as a
Christian, let him not feel ashamed, but in that
name let him glorify God. For it is time for
judgment to begin with the household of God; and if
it begins with us first, what will be the outcome
for those who do not obey the gospel of God?"
1 Peter 4:12-17 (NAS)
"And the one who keeps His
commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And we
know by this that He abides in us, by the Spirit
whom He has given us." I John 3:24 (NAS)
By the same Spirit we were all baptized into
Jesus' church, the dwelling of God:
"For
by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body,
whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and
we were all made to drink of one Spirit." 1
Corinthians 12:13 (NAS)
"So then you are no longer
strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens
with the saints, and are of God's household, having
been built upon the foundation of the apostles and
prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner
stone in whom the whole building, being fitted
together is growing into a holy temple in the Lord;
in whom you also are being built together into a
dwelling of God in the Spirit." Ephesians 2:19-22
(NAS)
